The Peace Summit in Switzerland has ended. And what now?

The Peace Summit in Switzerland did not bring a breakthrough in the war in Ukraine. Nearly 100 countries and international organizations took part in it and finally, a joint declaration was signed, regarding further actions towards the conflict in Ukraine. But not all summit participants, at the end decided to support the common declaration.

A statement rather than a peacemaking strategy

The Vatican, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, India, Mexico, South Africa, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates, Armenia and Libya did not agree with the decisions of the Peace Summit in Switzerland. At the same time, it must be admitted that these conclusions are neither surprising nor groundbreaking in any way. It seems that the lack of leading global players, i.e. China and Russia, doomed the talks to failure.

All the more so because the day before the meeting started, Putin proposed his conditions. Full dependence of Ukraine on Russia and annexation of all currently occupied territories.

The 80 countries that signed the declaration after the Peace Summit agreed that all prisoners of war, civilians and illegally displaced children must be returned to their homes. In order to publicize the problem of Ukrainian prisoners of war, who have been staying in camps in Russia for over two years, the families of the Defenders of Mariupol and Azovstal came to show their pain and worries to Lucerne in Switzerland, as we reported on PostPravda social media.

Russia should also provide Ukraine with free access to sea ports in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea, and the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia should return to Kyiv’s control. Moreover, the Russian Federation should allow Ukraine to trade grain freely. It was also decided that any nuclear attack on Ukraine was unacceptable.

The full text of the statement was published on the official website of the President of Ukraine.

These are by no means concrete plans for peace. We can even suspect that they are only ad hoc appeals to Moscow, which has no real intention of ending the war. Rzeczywistość wygląda zupełnie odwrotnie. On the day of the beginning of the Peace Summit, the Russians attacked with increased force in the direction of Pokrovsk . One of the largest cities in the region, located on the administrative borders of the Donetsk oblast.

Russia will receive an invitation to the next Summit

After the Summit in Switzerland, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky added that a specific peace plan would be prepared in the near future. Then Russia will also be invited to the next meeting. “Russia’s presence at the next Peace Summit will indicate that they have finally decided to end the war,” said the president of Ukraine, quoted by the BBC. He added that “negotiations between countries may start earlier. But only on condition that the Russian Federation withdraws its troops from Ukraine.”

In his opinion, on the eve of the summit, Vladimir Putin made a mistake. When he began to demand that Ukraine leave the controlled territories as a condition for starting peace talks. “This statement,” the Ukrainian president emphasized, “has significantly changed the opinion of many world leaders. With this one message, Putin told the whole world that his previous declarations about the desire to end the war can easily be multiplied by zero.

Russia did not participate in the Summit in Switzerland because The Kremlin was not invited by the meeting organizers. China, in turn, refused to participate in the talks for this very reason. At the end, most of the countries participating in the congress concluded that Moscow should have a voice and be included in the peace process. During the Summit that ended yesterday, the main topic of discussion was the Ukrainian peace formula.
